Greek Food

Postby Kedi Yavrusu » Tue 30 Mar 2010, 10:26

It's been some time since I last went to Greece but I do remember having some wonderful food. So I was wondering if everyone could remind me of all the great things I can find when we get to Mastihari. What is your favourite Greek food ???

If coffee counts as a food....frappe at the Tasty Palace (preprared by either Soula or Kostas), espresso at the Luis Apts.

Peppers florentinas (made with a creamier cheese than feta).

Fish soup made from that morning's catch.

What a difficult one :-\ :-\

It could be Soulas Rabbit Stifado
or Lamb stuffed with feta and spinach, or perhaps the most succulent Souvlaki to have ever graced my palate!! ;D ;D

I'm going to cry now :'( another 17 weeks to wait :O

It's a strange thing with lamb kleftiko.
I absolutely love it and there always tends to be a slight difference in the way it's made from taverna to taverna, though the succulent meat invariably just falls off the bone wherever they serve it.
However....... some places serve it with cheese, and some don't. I don't like it with cheese but always forget that whenever and wherever I've had it in Mastihari they do in fact serve it this way.
So I end up with a lovely lamb dish spoiled due to the fact it's covered in cheese.
Greeks think cheese goes with EVERYTHING!
Enough with the cheese there Mastihari!
:D
Everything on the specials in the Traditional House is fantastic too btw.

The thing about the Lamb with spinach is that I'm not even convinced it's Greek! Dissy at Tasty Palace made it, and she is Bulgarian! Sadly she has returned to Bulgaria for good we think. The cheese taste was so subtle after she had finished with it that it was impossible to identify it as feta, it was just an awesome flavour! :P

When Soula has sardines on the menu, I can't leave them alone either. ::)

I'm with the greeks on this one!

You can't have enough cheese - .

Cheese saganaki, baked feta, cheese pies, cheese and spinach pies, kleftico with cheese, greek salad......

No wonder my nails grow so quicky and look so healthy on holiday - can't say the same about my belly though.

I'm really looking forward to my first visit to mastihari - keep those food memories coming.........

I'm wondering if anyone has succeeded in actually eating the mysterious dish that appears on some Greek taverna menus, the one known as Lamb In The Oven!
I ask because I've ordered it in the Tasty Palace on successive visits only to be told both times that it wasn't available that night.
I also asked for it in some place in Paleocastritsa in Corfu only to be told the same.
And incredibly once again the same thing happened in Stoupa on the mainland. When I asked for it here, the waiter made his apologies and recommended the kleftico as an alternative. He must have read my mind as he said it was very nice and WASN'T made with cheese!
Nora, I'm quite happy for them to pile it on to their salads, fill their pies with it, and stuff whatever vegetables they please with it.
But just keep it away from lamb please!
;)

By the way, I don't ask for lamb in the oven any more. Which is a shame as I'm sure it's nice, as long as there's with not a morsel of cheese to be seen anywhere near it!

Meze at the Kali Kardia - absolutely gorgeous, a real treat served up by Nikos and George. Great food and even better company makes us look forward to returning year after year.
Katherine's langoustines marinated in brandy and ginger are also delicious - just make sure that you ask for the dish minus sparklers unless you want to attract lots of attention!!!
Mojitos - try Bar No 1, but make sure that you are wearing low heels and don't have far to stagger - thinking about it, same applies to Kali Kardia iro red wine.

Hmmm, seven weeks to go, bliss!!!

Lamb In The Oven

Postby Chas » Thu 01 Apr 2010, 13:40

Despite Ian K's well travelled failures, I have had this dish .... it was a "Today's Special" at the Traditional House.

The only problem with the TH is not having a sign-board outside with the specials on - you have to go into the kitchen where each dish is explained in wonderful detail ..... good thing all the food is behind glass, because I'd droll all over it :!:

...and having had the privilege of experiencing Chas's drooling at first hand ;) I can vouch for the value of the glass....
