About ten years ago, Metaxa revised all their processes. The changes have been working though the range since then.

Epta asteron (7*) went from wonderful to bland three or four years back; pende asteron (5*) is between the original epta and do-deka ...... whilst I considered tria asteron (3*) to be suitable as mouth or foot-wash a few years ago, it's now better than the original pende and a sight more affordable

I can't remember which part of Greece we were in at the time (the individual memories all tend to blend in to one big one over time, but it wasn't Mastihari) but instead of Metaxa, I tried raisin brandy for a change, bought from one of the little mini markets. It was almost as nice imo, and the star rating system also applied.
I would presumably have been buying the 3* stuff due to it being the cheapest, or possibly the 5.
Anyway, soon after, my daughter was in Rhodes and brought me a bottle of the 7* stuff home as a present.
Strangely, it was nowhere near as good as the other stuff that had made me like it in the 1st place.
